Your Teams status message is one line of text next to your name. Tiny. Nobody thinks about it. But it's the first thing a colleague reads before they decide whether to ping you now or wait, so a blank one makes them guess.
Guessing is where the passive-aggressive follow-ups come from. "You free?" then "?" then "?????" over eleven minutes. One good status message heads all of that off.
So instead of a plain Available, try:
- ๐ง Heads down till 3. Will surface for anything urgent.
Now people know. Below are 90-odd ideas grouped by situation. Copy, tweak, paste. And if you want the away and out-of-office side specifically, that lives in its own list of Teams away messages.
How to set a status message in Teams (10 seconds)
Click your profile picture, top right. Choose Set status message. Type the thing. Then pick when it clears from the dropdown, because a status message with no expiry is how you end up telling people you're at lunch on a Thursday afternoon.
There's also a tickbox to show the message whenever someone messages or @mentions you. Worth using on a focus day, when you want the "I'll reply after 3" to actually land in front of them.
Available and "I'm around" status ideas
For when you're genuinely at your desk and happy to be interrupted. Say so plainly. It gets you more of the quick questions and fewer of the "sorry to bother you" ones.
- โ Around and replying quickly.
- ๐ฌ At my desk. Ping away.
- ๐ข Online and caffeinated.
- ๐ Here and happy to help.
- ๐ฅ Clear morning. Send me things.
- โก Quick replies today.
- ๐ ๏ธ Around and fixing things. Shout if you need me.
- โ In and awake. Both, somehow.
Focus time status ideas
The point of a focus status isn't to look busy. It's to buy yourself a slower reply time without anyone taking it personally. Give them a number, though, or "focus time" just reads as "ignoring you".
- ๐ง Focus block. Replies after 3.
- ๐ง Deep work. I'll check Teams on the hour.
- โ๏ธ Writing something long. Back later.
- ๐ง Heads down. Not ignoring you, promise.
- ๐ต Off Teams for an hour to finish this.
- ๐ฏ One task, no tabs. Back soon.
- ๐ Quiet focus till lunch.
- ๐งฉ Untangling a thing. Slower today.
In meetings and on calls
Half of remote work is being on a call while three people wait for you in chat. A status here just manages expectations so nobody thinks you've vanished.
- ๐ On a call. Back right after.
- ๐๏ธ Meetings till noon. Replies will lag.
- ๐๏ธ In a workshop. Leave me the detail.
- ๐ฅ With a client. Catching up after.
- โณ Back once this finishes.
- ๐งพ Planning session. Send snacks.
- ๐ Reviewing numbers. Slow to reply.
- ๐ง Back to back today. Bear with me.
Working from home status ideas
Useful for the practical stuff: possible background noise, a doorbell, a dog with opinions. It tells people you're online, just not in the usual chair.
- ๐ก WFH today. Same me, worse chair.
- ๐ถ Home office. Dog may interrupt.
- ๐ฆ WFH. Doorbell might win occasionally.
- ๐ง๏ธ Working from home. Online as normal.
- ๐ง WFH and on headphones. Ping me.
- ๐ชด Remote today. Reachable here.
- ๐ถ WFH with small chaos nearby. Patient replies.
- ๐งฆ Home setup. Fully working, questionable socks.
Busy and heads-down status ideas
Different from focus. This is "I'm slammed, please only interrupt if it matters". Say it kindly and it works. Say it like a wall and people just route around you.
- ๐ด Busy day. Urgent things only, please.
- ๐ Firefighting. Back to normal soon.
- ๐ Buried till this afternoon.
- ๐งฏ On a deadline. Short replies today.
- โ๏ธ Slammed. Message me the important bit.
- ๐ Tight on time. Quick answers only.
- ๐ Head in a doc. Surfacing at 2.
- ๐ฆ Amber all day. Reachable, just slow.
Professional status messages that don't sound like a robot
For when you want to be clear and a bit human, without the corporate out-of-office energy of 2009. These are safe for external contacts and people you don't know well.
- ๐ผ Available and happy to help.
- ๐ง In focus time. I'll reply after 3.
- ๐ On calls this morning. Back this afternoon.
- ๐ก Working from home today. Reachable on Teams.
- ๐๏ธ In meetings. I'll come back to you by end of day.
- ๐ฅ Catching up on messages now.
- โ Back online and working through my chat.
- ๐ Reachable, slower than usual today.
Funny Teams status messages
For teams that can take it. Read the room first, and keep one rule: it should still tell people something true about when you'll reply. A joke that hides your availability is just a worse blank status.
- ๐ง Brain buffering. Please do not restart.
- โ Running on coffee and optimism. Back soon.
- ๐ Slow replies. Fast thoughts. Neither confirmed.
- ๐ฆ Fighting the doorbell. Back in a minute.
- ๐ง Temporarily a wizard. Admin, sadly.
- ๐ฅช In a meeting with a sandwich. No agenda.
- ๐ช๏ธ Away from desk. Probably forgot why.
- ๐ On 12%. Recharging with tea.
- ๐ง Pre-coffee. Approach with care.
Emoji shorthand people actually read
You don't need a full sentence half the time. One emoji at the front does the heavy lifting, because it registers before anyone reads a word. Here's the shorthand most people already understand.
| Emoji | Reads as | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| ๐ง | Focus / do not disturb | Deep work, writing, headphones on |
| โ | Quick break | Coffee, five minutes, back shortly |
| ๐ | On a call | Meetings, client calls |
| ๐ก | Working from home | Remote day, background noise likely |
| ๐ด | Busy | Deadline, slammed, urgent only |
| โ | Back / available | Returning, catching up |
One is plenty. Two if you must. Seven emojis in a row isn't a status, it's a distress signal.
What makes a status message actually useful
The good ones all quietly do the same job. Three small things.
Say what you're doing. Roughly. "In meetings", "heads down", "on a call". Nobody needs the project name.
Say when you'll reply. This is the bit almost everyone drops, and it's the useful bit. "After 3", "by end of day", "back at 2". Even "later today" beats silence.
Point elsewhere if you'll be gone a while. Out for the afternoon? "Urgent? Message @Sam" saves someone a wait. Costs you five seconds.
Set it to clear automatically
Teams lets you put an expiry on any status message. Use it, every time. Set "at lunch" to clear at 1:30. Set "on leave" to clear Monday morning. Otherwise the message just sits there long after it's true, and you spend three days back from holiday still telling everyone you're in Majorca. Takes two seconds. Always worth it.
Away or out of office? That's a different job
Everything above is for when you're around, in some form. If you're actually stepping out, going on leave, or setting an out-of-office, the wording changes, and there's a whole separate list for it: fun Teams away messages with emojis. On Slack instead? The idea's the same, the feature's slightly different: Slack status ideas with emojis.
Where Green Dotter fits
Here's the honest catch with any status message. It's just text. It doesn't touch the coloured dot next to your name, and that dot is what most people glance at first. Teams turns you to Away after about five minutes without keyboard or mouse activity, so on a long reading or thinking stretch your careful "๐ง focus till 3" can be sitting above an Away dot that says the opposite. There's more on that timing in how long before Teams shows you as away.
Green Dotter handles that other half. It's a free Mac and Windows app that keeps your machine genuinely active during a focused session, by clicking inside a safe area you choose on a randomised schedule, and it stops the moment you take back over. So your status message and your actual presence agree with each other. The keep Teams status active page has the full version.
Before using any automation on a work device, check your employer's and IT policies, and don't use it to pretend you're working when you're not.
Frequently asked questions
How do I set a status message in Microsoft Teams?
Click your profile picture in the top right, choose Set status message, type your text, and pick when it should clear. You can also tick the box to show it whenever someone messages or @mentions you.
What's the difference between a Teams status and a status message?
Your status is the coloured dot: Available, Busy, Away, Do Not Disturb. A status message is the short custom text you add next to it. They're set separately, so you can be Available with a message that says you're heads down until 3.
Can I use emojis in a Teams status message?
Yes. Emojis show next to your name and make the message easier to read at a glance. One at the start is usually enough.
Are funny Teams status messages a good idea at work?
In a familiar team, yes. With customers or senior people you don't know well, keep it plain. Good rule: the message should still tell people when you'll reply, joke or no joke.
How do I make my Teams status message clear automatically?
When you set the message, choose a clear time from the dropdown. Teams removes it for you when that time passes, so you don't spend Tuesday still telling people you're at lunch.
Why does my Teams status keep going to Away even with a message set?
A status message is only text, so it can't stop the presence dot changing. Teams flips you to Away after about five minutes without keyboard or mouse activity, whatever your message says. During long reading or thinking stretches the dot can still wander off.
